100+ Community Owners Strong
EB PREC is now 100+ community owners strong. To celebrate, we’re sharing voices from the community to highlight our collective brilliance and devotion to each other.
To kick things off we’d like to celebrate the 100th person to join the community-owner circle Yari Greaney. Yari lives in El Cerrito and is a policy analyst experienced in housing policy, climate resilience, risk management, and economic justice. We asked her, what moved her to join us as a community-owner.
HERE'S WHAT SHE SAID
As a renter, I never know when I might have to move, and I don't have control over my own housing. Thankfully there are tenant protections, but aside from those I am at the mercy of my landlord's whims. It doesn't have to be that way, and EB PREC is making another world possible.
I joined EB PREC because I want to live in a world where residents and community members have control over their land and housing. Housing shouldn't be a commodity that investors can use for profits – it should be a treasured resource controlled by the people who live in it. EB PREC is showing that communal ownership works. With leadership from indigenous communities and people of color who have fought displacement for centuries, I believe we can build a system of collective ownership over land and housing.
With climate change threatening homes and livelihoods, and with wealth becoming increasingly concentrated, we need to come together to collectively care for one another, and to help one another fight for our homes. I'm very excited to work with my fellow EB PREC community members to help reclaim housing resources from the investment market, and to create permanently affordable housing.
Welcome to the community Yari. You and hundreds of others make this work possible. We look forward to building a better world together.
