Keeping on Pushing

Keeping on Pushing

On March 26th to 31st, EB PREC Director, Noni Session, will be at West Jackson Ground Workers Exchange in Jackson MS, with the Cooperative Community of New West Jackson . This visit is the result of on-the-ground organizing here in Oakland, creating cooperative connections across the country.

In late 2018 Noni and Greg from EB PREC participated in a convening put on by Gavin Raders and the awesome folks at  Planting Justice. The resulting days set off an explosion of the imagination.  Noni and Greg met Nia Umoja, co-founder of New West Jackson Cooperative.  Nia and her comrad He-myong, spent the day with Noni and Greg visioning what Community Organizing is supposed to be. They considered failures and successes of creating sustained community spaces that can be inherited generation to generation, and are not dependent on the wealth of the few, but the wealth of the community coming together. This fertilization informs EB PREC's Points of Unity; to Move at the Pace of Community, Not Capital.

The Cooperative Community of New West Jackson rejects large foundation and donor dollars in favor of going one step at a time with community members for building vision and capacity.  They are now ready for help from the outside.  They are making strategic decisions toward mutual aid, not charity-based aid, for the support of black and brown people. With a solid foundation in community, they have now accepted a grant and are using it to convene the West Jackson charity exchange that is working to bring organizers and community together to move the collective vision forward.  Hand in hand, we will convene a conversation around what is the next step for helping our communities survive generation to generation with cultural continuity.
