Cultivating Community Arts: Welcome, Prince Street!

Cultivating Community Arts: Welcome, Prince Street!

In times of dread, artists must never choose to remain silent. - Toni Morrison

With the pandemic, uprisings, and housing under late-stage capitalism, now is a key moment to keep our BIPOC creative community rooted in the East Bay.

So we’re excited to welcome our first donated property into the EBPREC portfolio! EB PREC and Carolyn North officially signed the gift transfer deed for a home on Prince St!

Carolyn North is a writer and dance therapist who donated her $1.3 million Berkeley home to EB PREC to create affordable housing for BIPOC artists.

Carolyn and her late husband bought the house for $28,000 in the 60’s. She doesn’t believe that she should get a huge payday just because the market rate of her home has skyrocketed. She says that doing so would just “perpetuate a whole system [she] would like to see changed.”

The home on Prince Street will provide stable housing for Black, Indigenous and People of Color educators and artists connected with the Destiny Arts Center.  We're proud to support this group of critical community members: Our BIPOC teachers, creators, and culture-keepers!
